Ocean freight has been rising. More customers now want solid polycarboxylate superplasticizer (PCE) instead of liquid, to stop paying to ship water. The question is: powder or flake? Here is the direct answer.
Liquid PCE mother liquor is about half water. When ocean freight is high, you pay a great deal to ship that water.
Solid PCE is almost entirely active content — no water. One container therefore carries about 60% more active PCE, a real saving when freight is expensive.
Many customers say "I want powder." But powder comes in two kinds, and they are very different.

So when a customer asks for "powder", you have to know which one they mean.
Flake is the most sensible solid form, for several reasons:
Full performance — made without heat, so nothing is damaged.
Almost 100% active — no water to ship.
You dissolve it yourself — a simple tank, pump and stirrer is enough.
Most cost-effective — you avoid the cost of both the water and the extra milling step.
Flake is relatively new, so some producers are not yet familiar with it. But it is the best option for most concrete producers.

Here is the key point: even if you choose flake-milled powder instead of flake, you still win over liquid.
The reason is simple — you stop paying to ship water. The milled powder costs a little more than spray-dried powder, but it is still far cheaper than shipping a liquid that is half water.
Freight is high. Solid PCE is the way to reduce that cost, and among the solids, flake is the best choice. Dissolve it yourself and you get full performance at the lowest total cost.
Is it time to switch from liquid to solid PCE?
If ocean freight is hurting your cost, yes. Solid PCE ships far more active content per container.
Should I buy powder or flake?
Flake, or flake-milled powder. Avoid spray-dried powder for concrete.
Is spray-dried powder bad?
It is weaker in concrete, because heat damages the polymer. It may be acceptable for some dry-mix mortar, but not for quality concrete.
Does flake-milled powder cost more?
Yes, slightly more than spray-dried powder, but it still beats shipping a half-water liquid.
Is flake hard to use?
No. Dissolve it in water with a simple tank and stirrer — that is all.
