Concrete Admixture Technical Guide · No. 21
Solid polycarboxylate superplasticizer (PCE) flakes save more than freight. Add up active content, storage waste and dosing accuracy, and flake costs less overall — even though you dissolve it yourself. This guide lays out the full cost picture.
Liquid Polycarboxylate Superplasticizer (PCE) is about 45% water. You pay to ship that water. Flake PCE removes it.
| Container | Liquid PCE (55% active) | Flake PCE (~100% active) |
| 20-foot | 20 t → 11 t active | 18 t → 18 t active |
| 40-foot | 28 t → 15.4 t active | 28 t → 28 t active |
The same container carries about 60% more active polymer in a 20-foot container, and about 80% more in a 40-foot container, when you ship flakes.
Liquid loses value while it sits. Flake does not.
| Liquid PCE | Flake PCE | |
| Freezing | Can freeze in winter | Never |
| Bacteria | Can grow, needs preservative or purified water | None |
| Molecular drift | Drifts over months | Stable (no water) |
| Waste from expiry | Yes, spoils | Minimal, stable for a year or more |
Every drum of liquid that freezes or spoils is money written off. Flake has no water to freeze or spoil.
Flake Polycarboxylate Superplasticizer (PCE) is near 100% active, so you weigh it directly and know the exact dose.
Liquid is sold at 40% to 55% active, and you rely on the supplier's declared concentration. If the real concentration is lower than declared, your dose is wrong.
| Liquid PCE | Flake PCE | |
| Active content | 40%–55%, varies | 97%–100%, fixed |
| Dosing | Guess the concentration | Weigh the flake |
A wrong dose costs more than money: it can ruin a batch of concrete.
Flake has one extra step: you dissolve it in water. This needs a simple tank, pump and stirrer.
Most ready-mix plants already have this equipment — it is used to pre-blend the small additives. So the switch usually needs no new equipment at all; you reuse the existing mixer.
| Liquid PCE | Flake PCE | |
| Equipment | Dosing pump | Existing mixing tank |
| Extra labor | None | Dissolve before use |
After that, the flake solution works exactly like a liquid, at any concentration you choose.
| Cost item | Liquid PCE | Flake PCE |
| Freight | Pays for ~45% water | Pays for ~100% product |
| Storage | Freeze / spoil / drift | Stable, no water |
| Storage | Guess concentration | Weigh exactly |
| Dissolving | None | Reuse existing mixer |
| Bottom line | Higher overall | Lower overall |
Is flake Polycarboxylate Superplasticizer (PCE) really cheaper overall?
Yes. You save on freight, waste and dosing errors, which usually outweigh the small one-time cost of a dissolving tank.
Does dissolving add a lot of work?
No. A tank, pump and stirrer are enough. Dissolve and use, just like a liquid.
Is the quality the same?
Yes. Flake is the same polymer, just without water — so it is often more stable than liquid over time.
