Concrete Admixture Technical Guide · No. 22
Switching from liquid to solid polycarboxylate superplasticizer (PCE) flakes takes a tank, a pump and a stirrer — nothing more. Dissolve the flakes, use them like your old liquid, and start saving on freight and storage. This guide walks through the switch step by step.
| Reason | Liquid PCE | Flake PCE |
| Freight | Ships ~45% water | Ships ~100% product |
| Storage | Freezes, drifts, spoils | Stable, no water |
| Stock flexibility | Buy fixed concentrations | Make any concentration you need |
Flake Polycarboxylate Superplasticizer (PCE) gives you the same polymer, without the water — and you control the concentration.
The equipment is simple — and most plants already have it. A ready-mix plant uses a mixing tank to pre-blend small additives, and that same tank dissolves the flakes.
| Equipment | Purpose |
| Tank (stainless or PE) | Hold the solution |
| Pump | Transfer and circulate |
| Stirrer | Dissolve the flakes |
o high temperature, no high pressure — dissolving is a cold, physical process. If you already pre-blend additives, you reuse the existing mixer and add nothing new.
1.Start small. Dissolve a small batch and run a trial mix to confirm the dose.
2.Pick your concentration. Match the active content of your current liquid (for example, 20% or 40%), so your dosing pump settings stay similar.
3.Dissolve. Add flakes to water under stirring until fully dissolved.
4.Compound if needed. Add a retarder, defoamer or other small additives after the flakes are dissolved.
5.Scale up. Once the trial works, produce at the volume you need.
Flake Polycarboxylate Superplasticizer (PCE) dissolves at any practical concentration. Match the liquid you used before:
| If you used | Dissolve flakes to |
| 20% active liquid | 20% solution |
| 40% active liquid | 40% solution |
| 50% active liquid | 50% solution |
You can also make it stronger for a plant that doses by volume, or weaker for easier handling.
1.Compound in the right order. Dissolve the flakes first, then add small additives.
2.Do not mix with naphthalene-based water reducers. Keep the product lines separate.
3.Pair the slump-retention type correctly. PC 6020RT is used with a standard reducer like PC 6010, usually in a ratio of 9:1 to 3:1 — test to find the right level.
4.Watch air content. A slump-retention type may need a defoamer.
Do I need special equipment to switch?
No. A tank, pump and stirrer are enough. No heating or pressure.
Will the concrete quality change?
No. Flake Polycarboxylate Superplasticizer (PCE) is the same polymer as your liquid, just without water — often more stable.
How do I keep the dose the same?
Match the concentration of your old liquid, then the dose stays the same. Because flake is near 100% active, you weigh it directly and the dose is exact.
