Which Standard Should Your Polycarboxylate Superplasticizer (PCE) Meet: EN 934-2, ASTM C494, or GB 8076

Different markets require different standards. Your superplasticizer should meet the standard used in your market. Here is a clear map.


The Three Main Standards

GB 8076 sets limits for water reduction, strength, air content, setting time and more.


EN 934-2 defines what a plasticizer and a high-range water reducer must do. It is a harmonized standard, meaning products need it for CE marking.


ASTM C494 groups admixtures by type. Type F is a high-range water reducer. Type G is a high-range water reducer with retarding and high slump retention.


Water Reduction: The Real Numbers vs the Standard Floors


One common mistake is to read a standard's minimum water reduction as a typical value. The standards set floors, not targets — and the floors are deliberately low, because they must admit every kind of high-range reducer, including the older naphthalene-based products that are now largely obsolete.


A modern PCE performs far above these floors:

So when you see "≥ 12%" in ASTM C494, that is the entry ticket, not the performance — a real PCE clears it easily. High-end PCE products can reach 35% to 40% water reduction.


The compressive strength ratio tells the same story: ASTM C494 asks for at least 110% of the control at 28 days, EN 934-2 asks for 100%, and the GB 8076 high-performance class asks for 120%. Modern PCE typically exceeds 120%.

PCE model names often end with letters that describe the form and the function.

The Key Point About Flake PCE


Standards test performance, not form. They test water reduction, strength, setting time, air content and other properties — they do not care whether the product is liquid or solid.


A flake PCE, once dissolved in water, must therefore pass the same tests as liquid PCE. The standard is identical.


What matters is the performance after dissolving. That is why flake PCE is produced without heat: it must retain the same performance as liquid.

It depends on your market. Ask your customer, or check your country's rules.


Does flake PCE meet the same standards as liquid?


Yes. Standards test performance, not form. Dissolve the flake, and it is tested the same way.


What is JG/T 223?


China's standard written specifically for polycarboxylate superplasticizer.


Why is chloride content important?


High chloride corrodes the steel in reinforced concrete. Keep it low.
